California Ignition Interlock Bill One Step Closer to Passage

Friday, April 24th, 2009

AB 91, the proposed California law that would create a pilot program in four counties requiring all DUI drivers to use an ignition interlock device, is one step closer to passage.

AB 91, which would take effect in Los Angeles, San Diego, Alameda and Sacramento counties, has cleared the Assembly Public Safety Committee and will now be considered by the Assembly Transportation Committee. It will then go to the Assembly floor, to the California Senate, and finally to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Passage of AB 91, which was authored by Assemblyman Mike Feuer, would make California’s roads safer for everyone. Ignition interlock devices, which prevent cars from starting when drivers are unable to provide acceptable breath samples, effectively separate drinking from driving.  Perhaps most importantly, ignition interlock devices don’t cost taxpayers a dime - DUI offenders pay the cost of installing and maintaining IIDs.

New Mexico was the first state in the nation to require mandatory ignition interlock device use by first-time drunk drivers. At least 45 U.S. states now require some convicted drunk drivers use ignition interlock devices.

California Assembly Holds Hearing on Ignition Interlock Bill

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

The California Assembly Public Safety Committee will hold a hearing today on AB 91, a proposed bill that would create a pilot program requiring all convicted DUI drivers in four counties to install and use an ignition interlock device.

If passed, AB 91 will require all drivers convicted of DUI in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and Alameda counties between July 1, 2010 and July 1, 2015 to use an ignition interlock device. Those four counties account for 40 percent of all DUI arrests in California.

Ignition interlock devices prevent a vehicle from starting if the driver is unable to provide an alcohol-free breath sample. The device also requires the driver to perform periodic “rolling retests” to ensure that he or she remains alcohol-free.

How California Ignition Interlock Devices Work

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Mandatory use of ignition interlock devices is becoming more and more prevalent in California DUI cases, but many drivers aren’t sure how the device works. Gaining a better understanding of ignition interlock technology will help if you’re facing mandatory IID use after a California DUI arrest.

An ignition interlock is a small device - about the size of a cell phone - that, when installed in your vehicle, prevents the car from starting if you’re unable to provide an acceptable breath sample. In addition, you’re required to perform periodic ‘rolling retests’ to ensure that no alcohol was consumed after the car was started.

Some drivers express concerns about the safety of ignition interlock devices, but rest assured that IIDs are perfectly safe. For example, you are given plenty of time to pull to the side of the road to perform rolling retests.

If you need a California ignition interlock device because of a DUI arrest or for any other reason, Smart Start is here to help. Smart Start of California is the state’s leading provider of ignition interlock devices, and their friendly, knowledgeable techicians can install your IID and get you back on the road quickly. California DUI Cases and Ignition Interlock Devices

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Court-ordered ignition interlock devices are becoming more and more common in California DUI cases. Recent changes in California law lowered the BAC threshold for when judges must give ‘heightened consideration’ to ignition interlock use, and they are commonly ordered in repeat drunk driving cases.

An ignition interlock device is equipment installed into a vehicle that prevents the car from starting if the driver is unable to provide a breath sample that falls within a certain limit. In addition, the device requires periodic ‘rolling retests’ to ensure the driver remains alcohol-free.

If you’ve been ordered to install an ignition interlock device because of a California DUI arrest, Smart Start of California is here to help. We’re California’s leading supplier of ignition interlock devices, and our knowledgeable technicians can answer all of your questions.

Ignition interlock devices are quickly installed and easy to use. Simply contact Smart Start of California today at 1.800.774.0646 to locate a nearby service center and make an appointment. We’ll have you back on the road in no time!

National President of MADD Backs Ignition Interlocks in All DUI Cases

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The national president of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers is urging lawmakers to pass legislation making ignition interlock devices mandatory in every DUI case, even first offenses.

Laura Dean-Mooney was in Indianapolis this week to meet with Indiana lawmakers. Although Indiana lawmakers just approved legislation that requires second-time DUI drivers to use an IID for six months, Dean-Mooney said that does not go far enough.

Mandatory use of ignition interlock devices is becoming more and more common in DUI cases, but even if it’s not ordered by the court, voluntary use of an IID can help if you’re trying to negotiate a favorable plea bargain in your drunk driving case.  Voluntary IID use shows the court that you’re serious about not reoffending.

Smart Start of California is the state’s leading provider of ignition interlock devices. Their helpful technicians can efficiently install your IID, teach you how to use it, and get you back on the road in no time at all. For answers to your questions or to make an appointment, please contact Smart Start of California today at 1.800.774.0646.
